Voices and Viols

A Review by Jonathan Harris

Thank you to those who came to the Voices and Viols concert which raised £233 for church funds. The anthems by Dr William Croft, written for St Mary’s, Finedon, were performed here for (probably) only the second time since the first performances in 1717 and 1720. The concert took over 3 years to plan with over 100 hours of transcription work from the original manuscripts, help from the Bodleian Library and Royal College of Music, and consultation with the Croft expert Professor Donald Burrows from The Open University, who attended the concert. The demanding solo vocal lines, originally sung by the finest singers of the day from London, necessitated the employment of professional singers. The performance, and transcription of the anthems, has received interest from many musicologists and early music specialists. The next performance is scheduled for May 2017 with soloists from Peterborough Cathedral Choir, and the possible publication of the anthems, along with a CD release, is being investigated.
